Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
